The Origin - Artists Journey

Kevin’s journey began in the textured cultural landscape of Limerick, Ireland. It was here that an early fascination with observation and the physical act of making first shaped his worldview. Learning to trust instinct and find meaning in the overlooked, he was already developing a quiet, independent discipline.

In 2006, he made a decisive move to New York City. This shift was more than geographical: it marked a definitive turning point in his practice. While he initially opted for business school over art school, the intensity of the city eventually pulled him back to the canvas.

Refining his hand through studies at Hunter College under Robert Swain and Carrie Moyer, his Work evolved into a sustained commitment to abstraction. By 2015, he'd found his definitive voice: moving beyond representational forms to master the interaction between light and structure.

Over two decades in New York, Kevin has refined an approach defined by technical restraint and precision. Today, his Work invites the intentional collector into a space where resonance is built, felt, and quietly revealed.

Studio Dialogue.

Studio Dialogue Cover
"I’m interested in the moment a painting becomes a space you can look into. The frame becomes a threshold that draws the viewer closer: an invitation to come closer and look through."

The Resonance.

The resonance of Kevin’s practice is found in the stillness. His paintings hold a quiet tension that encourages the collector to pause and breathe. Through the subtle variation of his gradients, he seeks to create a meditative experience that's accessible to everyone.

Encountering his Work is intended to be a shifting experience. From a distance, it feels structured: but up close, it becomes more atmospheric. It's a visual sanctuary where the collector is invited to step into a space rather than simply observing an object.

The Intention.

Kevin invites you to view the canvas as a threshold rather than a boundary. His primary intention is to transform the flat surface into a space you can look into: a moment where the painting functions as a doorway.

By introducing geometric forms that resemble windows or thresholds, he seeks to open the image and suggest a space beyond the surface. This approach turns each Work into a visual invitation for the viewer to step closer, sit with the painting, and accept the invitation to enter the layered color field.

The Process.

You're invited to witness a process of rhythmic discipline and anticipation. Because he maintains a professional career during the day, Kevin’s art practice takes place in the evenings and on weekends within his New York City home studio.

He paints while listening to minimal electronic music: utilizing the steady, repetitive pulses to enter a meditative state. The process begins with a slow methodical build-up of gradients. Once the atmospheric foundation is set, he utilizes a rigorous taping method to introduce geometric shapes.

The "reveal" after removing the tape is the centerpiece of his process. It highlights the interaction and tension between the fluid, shifting gradient and the hard-edged "window" frame.

The Details.

The Technical Bio.

Kevin Cross invites us into a practice defined by atmospheric depth and the gradual accumulation of form. Originally from Limerick, Ireland, and now based in New York City, his focused discipline is Contemporary Atmospheric Abstraction.

Through a meditative, rhythmic process of layering gradients, Kevin establishes a quiet movement that precedes his geometric thresholds. His Work is an invitation to move beyond the surface: welcoming the intentional collector into a space where structure coexists with a profound, layered stillness.

The Craft & Materiality.

The craft behind Kevin’s Work is a testament to technical adaptation and precision. He works exclusively with acrylics and various mediums to achieve a level of luminosity and depth usually reserved for oil paints.

This choice is born from the necessity of his home studio environment: requiring a master-level control of drying times and color interactions. By balancing the "messy" nature of the building gradient with the sharp, controlled lines of the geometric threshold, he ensures the materiality of his Work reflects the exact substance we champion at Mitsooz.

The Artist's Secret (Unseen Fact).

Kevin Cross invites us to see the world through a unique lens: he is colorblind. By navigating a visual field where red and green tones intersect, he has moved beyond the literal naming of color to the intuitive practice of feeling it.

Rather than a limitation, this reality has become the foundational strength of his Atmospheric Abstraction. Because he does not rely on conventional color theory, his Work is guided by value, rhythm, and the structural relationship between tones.

Combined with the influence of minimal electronic music, this allows him to "feel" the color as a vibration. It is a secret language of light and structure that makes his Work uniquely resonant for the intentional collector.
