The Narrative.

Carbon
An Original Striated Ink Drawing

The Heat of the Golden Hour.
Nature is a point of departure, not a template. In "Carbon," Charles Buckley utilizes a vibrant, earth-toned palette to document the meditative patience of a surfer waiting for the set. The title suggests something elemental: a sun-baked, primordial memory of the California coast. From a distance, the mind constructs the silhouette of the rider and the rhythmic swell of the water. However, as the viewer approaches the page, the image dissolves into the heat-shimmer of hand-drawn lines. It is a work that captures the solitary, quiet tension of the ocean in the moments before the horizon shifts.

The Mechanics of Perception.
Based in Brooklyn and exhibiting with the Susan Eley Gallery, Buckley utilizes a meticulous application of horizontal ink lines to mimic the visual language of CRT television sets. In "Carbon," the vibrating orange ink represents the way a specific moment—etched in sunlight—can feel both deeply permanent and frustratingly unstable. This square 14x14 framed drawing is a rigorous mnemonic investigation into the "gaps" of our personal history. By leaving the space between the lines undrawn, Buckley requires the collector to fill in the missing emotional information, proving that what we lose to time is just as potent as what we keep.
