The Narrative.

Headlights
An Original Striated Ink Drawing

The Glow of the Night Drive.
There is a profound area where things cannot be explained rationally, yet fit within the logic of the page and seem to be known. In "Headlights," Charles Buckley captures the visceral, almost blinding sensation of a car approaching through the mist or the deep night. It is a moment defined by high-contrast light and the "vibration" of the road. From a distance, the brain instantly identifies the two glowing orbs as a vehicle. However, as the collector approaches the work, that representational clarity dissolves into a stark, rhythmic pattern of ink and absence.

The Mechanics of Perception.
Based in Brooklyn and exhibiting with the Susan Eley Gallery, Buckley utilizes a meticulous application of horizontal ink lines to mimic the visual language of analog CRT television sets. In "Headlights," the negative space of the paper is the true subject: it is the source of the "light" that pierces through the heavy black ink. This 16x17 framed drawing is a rigorous mnemonic investigation into the gaps in our memory. It mimics the way we remember a drive along a dark highway: we lose the details of the car and the road, keeping only the intense, luminous energy of the lights themselves.
