As a recovering academic with a PhD in Spanish, Bell spent thirty years studying the mechanics of language and the visual histories of Spain, France, and the Southwest. In Ancestors, she replaces the formal grammar of academia with a practice grounded in intuition and material discovery. Utilizing a rich combination of oil pigment and cold wax on cradled panel, Bell uses palette knives to scratch, scrape, and build through layers, creating a visual record of the painting’s evolution. This large-format masterpiece is a record of resonance: a bridge between the intellectual depth of a scholar and the intuitive soul of a master painter.
