The Narrative.

Hold Still
An Original Striated Ink Drawing

The Genesis of a Vision.
The catalyst for Charles Buckley’s entire body of work was a discovery: photographs his father had taken of the 1969 moon landing directly from a live television broadcast. In "Hold Still," Buckley returns to this origin point, capturing the frozen, high-contrast silence of the lunar surface. The title serves as a command to both the subject and the viewer: a plea to preserve a moment before it dissolves into the gaps of history. From a distance, the brain constructs the iconic imagery of the moon walk. However, as the collector approaches the page, the image fractures into the rhythmic, horizontal "vibration" of the lines, mirroring the unstable nature of how we remember our greatest milestones.

The Mechanics of Perception.
Based in Brooklyn and exhibiting with the Susan Eley Gallery, Buckley utilizes a meticulous application of horizontal ink lines to mimic the visual language of analog CRT television sets. This "analog digitalism" creates a sense of movement and instability: proving that forgetting is a necessary component of remembering. In "Hold Still," the undrawn white space of the paper generates the blinding light of the moon, requiring the viewer to fill in the missing details. This 11x13 drawing is a rigorous mnemonic investigation: a permanent record of the "gaps" that define our collective and personal history.
