The Narrative.

After the Storm
An Original Oil and Cold Wax Painting

The Atmospheric Stillness of Renewal.
There is a specific vibration in the air once the clouds have cleared. In After the Storm, Kari Bell investigates the visceral sensation of the desert after a deluge: where the dust has settled and the colors of the Southwest are revealed in their most saturated state. This large format Work is not a depiction of a place, but a record of attention. Utilizing a rich combination of oil pigment and cold wax, Bell creates a contemplative field where forms emerge and dissolve within the material, inviting the collector to pause and interpret the layered surfaces through their own history. It is a visual sanctuary designed to bring a sense of profound peace and structural complexity into the home.

The Intelligence of the Excavated Surface.
As a recovering academic who spent thirty years in higher education, Bell’s transition to the studio represents a radical departure into intuitive exploration. In After the Storm, she utilizes palette knives and specialized tools to scratch, scrape, and build through the wax, creating a visual record of the painting’s evolution. This 36x30 masterpiece on cradled panel is a testament to the found image: a composition that was discovered through the physical act of making rather than fixed expectation. It is an archival bridge between the intellectual depth of a PhD scholar and the raw, honest hand of a contemporary master. For the intentional collector, this Work offers a tactile depth that rewards slow looking and a persistent connection to the geography of the Southwest.
